“One cannot always choose where to live and what work should look like, especially under the current COVID-19 lockdown situation,” says Jaco Leeuwner, pastoral worker of IMSA and currently ministering in a unique way in Namaqualand with his wife, Sandra.
“One of the characteristics of any ministry activity should be to adapt to what is relevant. e-Ministry is certainly helping many of us to continue to reach out to one another and to worship God in a collective way, but let’s not miss out on providing physical help too when opportunity knocks at your door.”
In between their current involvement with e-Ministry for IMSA, Biblia, and HospiVision, Jaco and Sandra Leeuwner became aware of such an opportunity around them: Walking the Fence-lines when the weather allows it of farms related to the ministry base in Namaqualand and fixing holes.
“This is an important aspect of sheep-farming when sheep are roaming free without full-time shepherds. During severe droughts like this, everything is hungry and predators such as jackal coming through fence-lines cause a lot of damage to flocks. A total distance of 20 km has been done so far fixing 94 problem areas. The need is therefore real and we hope to escalate this initiative into an annual outreach opportunity for people to come and help.”
Other tasks such as feeding some of the sheep and fixing roads are also provided as and when needed.
